Thoughts

I found out yesterday, 31st March 2017, that Lanre had passed away, I am in shock and still struggling to find the words to express how sad how feel to have lost someone so special. I met Lanre when we studied together at Brunel University, I don't recall the exact circumstances surrounding our meeting, it could have been at one of the African - Caribbean Society meetings debating the correct way to pronounce plantain or it could have been while we dashed across the campus trying not to be late for our next lecture. All I knew is that I was drawn to her lovely sense of humour, her compassion, her beautiful dimpled smile and her unique walk; we were destined to become close friends. Unfortunately, I lost contact with Lanre a few years after we graduated, however, for me, the time we had spent together had created a bond of friendship that would never be broken. Over the coming years I would bump into her in random places, a Salsa night in Ladbroke Groove or in M & S Oxford Street while she was searching frantically for a Turkey for a family Christmas meal. I always left these encounters with the thought of how lucky I am to have known her and with a renewed energy to reconnect. It is with a very heavy heart that this was not meant to be, at this point in time I can only send out my condolences to her family and friends (which I am sure she had many) and to be thankful for the wonderful memories I have of my beautiful friend Lanre Johnson. I will miss you dearly Love always Charles

Today has been simply surreal. It began with the funeral of the mother of one of my oldest and dearest friends. A wonderful and fitting service to a kind and loving lady was held at the very same church where we conducted Lanre's funeral service. We went to the cemetery, and left when it was finished not to go to the reception, but to the cemetery where my Lanre is buried, because today is a year to the day that she died. Whilst there I also placed a gravemarker on the grave of my closest uncle, who died last year and I buried because he had no children. All of this going on the birthday of my youngest son and then to add further to the mix of emotions, I received an email from the Charity Commission confirming that the charity I have set up in my sister's name to help young kids in Africa with their education, has been approved. It came to life on the anniversary of her death. I am sad and elated in equal measure. The Lanre Johnson Charity, registered charity number 1171349. comes into existence today.

Today, I have submitted the application to the Charity Commission for a charity that will bear your name, little sister. Tomorrow I will visit your resting place. x
